Yorkshire Coast

A wild and gorgeous region of England, crafted by 190 million years of history. From Redcar in the North to Spurn Point in the South, there is an enormous diversity of places to explore and plenty of fossils to find.

We operate primarily in the Whitby area, but will happily work with you to find an adventure that suits your needs.

Our main locations

Port Mulgrave

"Home of the Dac". With newly refurbished steps down, this is one of the easier locations to access. Usually a few ammonites to be had which tend to split well, but it has limited parking and is often busy.

Ravenscar

A personal favourite of Andrew's. Home to the best views of Robin Hood's Bay, a variety of ammonites found nowhere else, and the hardest climb back up from the beach of any of the locations.

Robin Hood's Bay

A stunning village that usually has plenty of parking (paid from Mar.-Nov.). A straightforward walk onto the rocky foreshore provides an opportunity to find a diversity of finds from the Lower to Upper Lias. Often harder to find ammonites here than the other locations, but finds tend to be high quality if you do get them.

Runswick Bay

The easiest getdown location on the rocky coast. A longer walk to the fossils, but they can be found towards Kettleness and Port Mulgrave. Often heavily picked over through summer, but usually something to be had if you are willing to hunt.

Saltwick Bay

A fairly easy to access beach with decent steps down and free parking at the top. Often very heavily picked and the common "Dac" ammonites tend to split poorly. However it produces the best Hildoceras and Phylloceras ammonites if you are lucky to get to one first!

Sandsend

Decent parking, but a walk over the cliffs is required before descended back down to the fossiling areas. The best Harpoceras ammonites come from here, but it has become a popular location to hunt in the last couple of years so can be slim pickings if you are unlucky.

Staithes

Another gorgeous village perched on the edge of the sea. The Middle Lias produces fewer ammonites, but there is always the chance for something rare including starfish. The walk to Port Mulgrave can provide some Upper Lias finds as well.

The Holderness Coast

Shaped by the ice ages, the Holderness Coast extends from Bridlington to Spurn Point. The boulder clays that make up the cliff are the deposits from the glaciers and consist of rocks and mud brought from regions across the North of the UK and even beyond. Finds here are highly variable and depend on weather and sand levels, and often long walks looking for boulder fields to hunt through are required.

Locations include Barmston, Skipsea, Atwick, Hornsea, Mappleton, Cowden, Albrough, Tunstall. Withernsea, Holmpton and Easington. Access to any/all of the beaches can vary as this is the fastest eroding coastline in Europe. Please contact us if any of the sites appeal and we can arrange something.
